How To Re-size Images
How to re-size your image.
In Photoshop Elements click on ‘Image’ in the top toolbar. Then select ‘Re-size’ and ‘Image size’ to display the image size details. Ensure the ‘Scale Styles’, ‘Constrain Proportions’ and ‘Re-sample image’ boxes are ticked and in the ‘Pixel dimensions’ box at the top ensure you have pixels selected as the units. In the pixels dimensions box enter 1600 as the width.
The height will adjust automatically. Check the height. If it is more than 1200 then you need to enter 1200 in the height box. This will reduce the width to less than 1600.
Click OK. Do not worry about file size or DPI this is not relevant here, we are working in pixel size only.
If your image is not exactly 1600 x 1200 (e.g. if it is in a portrait or letterbox format) then a black background will be added to fill the remaining space.
If you want to add a background colour other than black then you can do so. Open the resized image created above, and then click on ‘Image’ in the top toolbar. Then select ‘Resize’ and ‘Canvas size’ to display the ‘Current image size’, the ‘New Size’ work area and ‘Canvas extension colour’ selector box. First set the background colour on the colour palette to the colour you want. Make sure the units in the ‘New size’ area are set to pixels, type in 1600 for the width and 1200 for the height. Click OK.
Your image is now enlarged to show the picture with the spare space around in the background colour you selected.
Save the file as a jpeg using the correct file name format as described in the rules above.
